Let’s skip the formal artist bio with fancy words to sound important. The truth is, I’m a straightforward person, so here’s the real story. I never planned on being here. Honestly, even with five years of art school behind me, I didn't pick up a paintbrush for keeps until I was in my late 50s—eleven years ago. I thought I was just learning how to use acrylics, but it turns out, the paint was learning how to use me. A strong, clear voice inside me woke up and said, "This isn't about building a portfolio. This is about finding *you*." And that’s when my mantra appeared, as clear as day:

“Squiggles are My Machetes to Freedom.”

I know, it sounds a bit wild! But it’s the honest truth. Every time I start a new piece, I’m not aiming to create a consistent, recognisable "Irene Matejka style." I’m hacking through the overgrowth of life to discover a new part of myself. Each painting is a unique, uncensored record of my feelings—a visible snapshot of a sensation you can’t always put into words. My art is a journey of self-discovery, and my greatest hope is that it becomes a part of yours as well. I create for those who stand before a painting and don't just see it, but feel it.
